Getting the new ecosystems is of the essence if you want to guarantee a podium position on the new c

It comes as no surprise that M2M is the new ecosystem generator, and connected cars are one of the hottest ones at the moment. Apple has followed the footsteps of Google and announced a new UI for a few automotive brands, where you can enhance your smartphone’s functionality, while driving – it’s called CarPlay.

It’s like the connected TV, but where real things happen, because the hardware owners are resisting the temptation to try and do everything, like reinvent the wheel – in this case it [literally] already exists!

And why is this a newsworthy subject?

Because even though Apple makes 90% of its revenues from hardware, its empire’s backbone was built on the back of iTunes and the App store. At some point that market, represented 1% of the costs while generating 10% of the Revenue – and the app store/iTunes was the common denominator between iPod, iPhone and iPad!

Getting the new ecosystems is of the essence if you want to guarantee a podium position on the new connected digital economy – cars, homes and soon, you.  tweet this

And again, it’s not only about getting an app store running, produce a few apps, and get some clients to use it. It’s about kick-starting an entangled demand-supply set of relationships between developers and users, catalysed by marketing and technology in parallel – read more about how IBM’s Watson, is taping in to the app marketing revolution.

Every new feature a smartphone brings enables endless applications for every category of apps. One example is the accelerometer – originally used for GPS – now fuels gaming, measurement, imaging and sports apps, just to name a few. Imagine adding a car to the mix! You can track the road conditions via accelerometer in connected cars, create an apps that actually reserves and pays for your parking space in your driving route for the day, and selects the music playlists according to your mood, that it can identify by your driving patterns. That’s more personal data, more behavioural standards and more transactions synchronised through the cloud in to all your connected devices.

How many more companies can apply their USP’s to yet another “device” called the automobile, or even create new ones?

We’ve seen the benefits for the drivers/users (family and youngsters will be very big in this space), the market itself, what about the hardware manufacturers? The automotive industry will be able to understand how their clients use their product, customise it further and detect trends to stay ahead of the curve.

They can also go further down the road and disrupt their own markets like maintenance. You can now have a self-managing maintenance system, that fits the required work into your personal needs, and streamlines the process of detecting what you need, order it, schedule and bill you for it. They can even create a maintenance market where 3rd parties can build their maintenance plans according to cost, location or milage.

The self-driving car might become a key investment for google sooner than we all expect…
